CHLORITOID    Dame Hill Rd., Orford, NH
2 - 3 mm chloritoid "pimples" (porphyroblasts) in 8 cm shist matrix.
Species:           CHLORITOID
Locality:          Dame Hill Rd., Orford, NH
Specimen Size: 2 - 3 mm chloritoid "pimples" (porphyroblasts) in 8 cm shist matrix.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2013
Catalog No.: TBC
Notes: Chloritoid occurrence reported by Doug Rumble of the Carnegie Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, DC.
Chloritoid is typically found in low grade regional metamorphic rocks, rich in aluminum and iron. At higher metamorphic temperatures, staurolite and/or almandine form. Chloritoid is uncommon in New Hampshire, but more common to the to the west in Vermont.

PHENAKITE    Vicinity of Water Pocket, Bartlett, NH
3 mm phenakite crystal
Species:           PHENAKITE
Locality:          Vicinity of Water Pocket, Bartlett, NH
Specimen Size: 3 mm phenakite crystal
Field Collected: Bob Wilken
Catalog No.: A Bob Wilken specimen and photo
Notes: EDS analysis indicated a silicate with only another low atomic weight element present. Phenakite is the obvious choice.

CORDIERITE altering to "pinite" mica    Soapstone Quarry, Richmond, NH
5 mm field of view. Bright reflective geometric patterns of pinite mica surrounding islands of un-altered cordierite.
Species:           CORDIERITE altering to "pinite" mica
Locality:          Soapstone Quarry, Richmond, NH
Specimen Size: 5 mm field of view. Bright reflective geometric patterns of pinite mica surrounding islands of un-altered cordierite.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Sept. 2013
Catalog No.: TBC
Notes: Cordierite exposed to surface weathering alters relatively quickly to "pinite" mica. Per mindat: "Mineralogically, 'pinite' is primarily composed of mica (usually muscovite) and clay group minerals."
